Vedic astrology, also called Jyotish, is the traditional Indian system of astrology used to understand life patterns, timing, personality, relationships, career themes, and spiritual growth. The word Jyotish is often translated as the science of light because the chart studies the lights and planets as symbols of awareness, karma, and life direction.

One of the biggest differences between Vedic astrology and most modern Western astrology is the zodiac system. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is aligned more closely with fixed star positions. It also gives strong importance to the Moon, the Ascendant or Lagna, and the 27 nakshatras, also known as lunar mansions.

A Vedic birth chart is calculated from your birth date, exact birth time, and birthplace. From there, the astrologer studies the planets, signs, houses, nakshatras, planetary strength, and divisional charts. This creates a more complete picture than a simple Sun sign description because the full chart shows how many life themes work together.

The nine planets used in Jyotish are the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu. Each planet has a symbolic role. For example, the Moon describes emotional pattern and memory, Venus describes love and values, Mars describes action and courage, and Saturn describes discipline, delay, maturity, and long-term responsibility.

Vedic astrology is also known for timing systems such as dashas. Dashas help explain why certain topics become active during specific life periods. A relationship question, career change, spiritual turning point, or family responsibility may feel clearer when seen through the larger timing cycle of the chart.

The best use of Vedic astrology is not fear or fixed prediction. A good Jyotish reading should make the chart practical, human, and understandable. It can help you see tendencies, strengths, repeated patterns, and current timing while still leaving room for choice, effort, emotional honesty, and personal responsibility.
